KEITH LATIMER – 1930-2019
It is with great sorrow that we are letting you know about the passing of Keith Latimer. Keith was a member of the Thornbury Yacht Club from its inception in 1983, and proudly served as our Commodore in 1991-92 (see picture). In 2014, in recognition for his important service to TYC, he was awarded an Honorary Life Membership. In his beloved RhumbRunner, Keith sailed the length and breadth of Georgian Bay, and continued to give cruising advice and directions long after he had stopped active sailing.
In his career, Keith Latimer was an operational problem solver. Early on he worked for the Ford Motor Co., and later for the Toronto Western Hospital, helping both to improve their operational efficiencies. He passed on some of his expertise by creating his own course and teaching it at Ryerson Polytechnic Institute. Despite his accomplished career, however, Keith was a passionate believer in early retirement, and he followed his own advice when he retired at 55… to ski and sail.
Keith didn't miss many meetings or social events at TYC ever, including last Sunday's Pub Night! He dearly loved being part of our community and being in the heart of the action. Many of you will recall him keeping a watchful eye on Launch and Haul Out days from his lawn chair parked near RhumbRunner.
Keith passed away on Friday, January 25 at his own personal Shangri-La - the home he built with his own hands more than 50 years ago in Craigleith. He specifically asked that there be no Celebration of Life following his passing. A small, private service for immediate family will be held in the next few days. However, in the spring, the Latimer family also plans to host a memorial get-together for Keith's other 'family' at TYC. Maybe the boats will be back in the water. Keith would have liked that.
